Miso Braised Turnips

This simple one pan dish takes turnips to the next level! With only a few ingredients and a cook time of less than 30 minutes this dish is a perfect side to any meal. 

Ingredients

  • 1 lb / 500g of small turnips, cleaned and sliced in half (don't discard greens)
  • Greens from your 1lb of turnips
  • 3 tbs miso
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tsp chili flakes (more if you like more spice)
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 2 tbs coconut oil
 

Miso Braised Turnips

In a medium saute pan heat two tablespoons coconut oil over medium heat

Place turnips flat side down in the coconut oil and sear

Once the turnip are brown on one side (3-5 minutes) flip over and sear the other side for another 1-2 minutes

While turnips are searing mix 3 tbs miso with ½ cup warm water and dissolve the miso into a broth

Pour ½ of your miso mixture into the pan and cover

Braise the turnips for another 3 minutes in the miso broth

Once turnips are soft in the middle remove them from the pan and set aside

Add to your miso broth 2 cloves of minced garlic, 3 tsp of chili flakes and the rest of your miso broth

Saute for 3-4 minutes until sauce starts to thicken

Add all your turnip greens and spinach into the broth and simmer until greens are cooked

Add back you turnips and toss with the sauce and greens, saute a few more minutes until your sauce is thick and everything is well combined.

Tip: When turnips are not in season, we use potatoes for this recipe.  In summertime it's great chilled as a salade.
